In a significant escalation, Russian forces launched a drone attack overnight that affected 15 Ukrainian regions, damaging critical energy infrastructure and residential areas, officials reported on Thursday. The Ukrainian air force successfully intercepted 78 of the 105 drones deployed in the assault, with an additional 23 believed to be affected by electronic jamming.

The strikes primarily impacted power lines and substations in the Kyiv, Odesa, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Ukraine's energy ministry noted that these attacks resulted in temporary disruptions to railway services in southern Odesa and power outages for numerous households. Odesa's regional governor, Oleh Kiper, confirmed that power was restored to over 3,000 consumers, though around 2,000 residents remained without electricity.

Authorities reported downing approximately 15 drones over Kyiv and surrounding areas during an air alert that lasted more than five hours. Minor damage to properties was also reported in the central regions of Poltava, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad.

According to Russia's defense ministry, the attacks targeted energy facilities that support Ukrainian military operations. While Moscow claims it does not intentionally strike civilian targets, it has consistently targeted urban areas behind the front lines. A recent Russian guided bomb hit an apartment building in Kharkiv, injuring at least 10 people.

As the conflict continues more than two and a half years into Russia's full-scale invasion, the intensity of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has increased, particularly with winter approaching. This has led Kyiv to urge its allies to lift restrictions on the use of Western long-range weapons to mitigate Russia's offensive capabilities.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian military announced it had employed U.S.-provided ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike a Russian radar station, aimed at enhancing its ability to evade detection and interception of ballistic targets. The specifics of the strike, including its timing and location, were not disclosed.
